Across the bay, to
the Berea Penninsula, farmed by
trees, sunlit and reflecting blue
skies. One of our favorite pictures
of Ireland. Baltimore Head,
County Cork Looking west, from
Baltimore Head, with islands
shimmering in the sun. Verdent greens, and
azure blues, on the estuary
outside of Kinsale. Berea Penninsula,
County Kerry Across a small,
un-named bay, with the sun glinting
off the water. Standing stone
circle, dated to 4,000 years
ago, on a hillside, with
the Magilikuddy Reeks in
the Background.
Ancient
ecclesiastical center, the crossroads of
ancient Ireland, rightnext to the
Shannon. Two round towers, and the
runs of five monestaries ..
along with celtic
crosses. Jer Point Abbey, a
well-kept site, first built in the
11th century. South of Killkenney
town, the site is being
restored by the national historic
trust. A sheep from a huge
flock, along the
roadside near Molls Gap,
on the Ring of
Kerry .. notice hes on the car side of the
fence! Sun, shimmering off
the shore break, on the strand
at Barley Bay, near Mizen Head
weather station. A six-mile
jaunt up the strand, and I never met a
soul on the mornings
walk. Mizen Head, County
Cork The sun, beginning to
set, behind Mizen
Head, looking out southwest
across the Atlantic Ocean. Some
say the mystica l land of Tir na nNog
lies in that
direction. Birr, County
Offally Birr Castle, still a
private residence, isnt open for
tours, but it graces the grounds and sets the tone for
this central Irish plains location. Birr, County
Offaly The so-called
soft falls at Birr Castle, on the 200-plus acres
of grounds, open to the
public for tours. Pine View Farm,
County Offaly The ever-present
gorse, yellow-flowered and seemingly
blooming almost the entire year, is
present in most locations around Ireland. Its
a larger, thorned
version of heather. Primose, in a rainbow
of colors, thrive in the irish
climate, cool and rain-filled.
Thisplanting is at Christys
Hotel, just across the
square from Blarney Castle
grounds. Ring of Kerry, Count
Kerry Snow-Melt Falls,
along the roads, on the southern
portion of the Ring of Kerry. This one is
fed, and more active at this point, from
melting spring snow on
the Magilikuddy Reeks
Mountains. Kells Priority,
County Killkenney South of Killkenney
Town, Kells Piority
is a hidden treasure (hardly on
any map). I discovered
it in a book, and drove to finally
find it .. a huge site, not being touched,
like other sites, by the national
historic trust. Blarney, County
Cork Taken through an
arrow-slit, on the third level of
Blarney Castle, wecan see sprintime
daffodils and flowering
carb-apple trees. Clonmacnoise, County
Offaly A different look at a
classic Celtic cross, taken through two
different windows,
at Clonmacnoise. One of three high (15
feet tall) Celtic crosses, moved from there
original locations at Clonmacnoise, into
the visitors center, to preserve them from
the deteriorating weather
conditions. Exact replicas
replaced them on the site. Clonmacnoise, County
Offaly The smaller, and more
complete, of two round towers
at Clonmacnoise, taken through ruins
of monestary buildings
close by. Near Limerick City,
County Limerick In the country, this
scene (close-in limestone
walls, or thorn-covered hedge rows) is the
rule, not the exception. Meeting oncoming
cars, tractors or busses
can be exciting!
